Island Hopping Cape Maclear – Budget Friendly




For anyone visiting Malawi, spending time on the shores of the beautiful Lake Malawi is an absolute must with its warm clear waters lapping on the sandy beaches.
This package will have you exploring two of Lake Malawi national parks’ uninhabited islands - each hosting their own eco-lodge camp - as well as enjoying the bustling lakeshore village of Cape Maclear. Both Domwe and Mumbo Islands are bursting with wildlife and some fantastic views await those that venture on the island's hiking trails. Rustic beauty and totally off-grid, you’ll live at one with nature and the feeling of time slowing down. Relax on the beaches and hammocks or fill your days with a variety of water based activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, swimming and scuba diving
This morning you will depart for Cape Maclear, a journey of approx 4 hours to take you to the beautiful lakeshore. Airport collection from Lilongwe or Blantyre is available on request. Tonight you’ll be staying at Thumbi View Lodge - a sociable backpackers situated on the shores of Lake Malawi with a pool, bar and restaurant. You’ll be staying in an ensuite courtyard room on a bed and breakfast basis.
After lunch you’ll take the 3pm boat to Domwe Island. The boat ride through the beautiful Lake Malawi National Park takes approx 45 minutes from Cape Maclear. You’ll be staying for two nights in a safari tent (shared bathrooms) on a full board basis with kayaking and snorkelling included.
Domwe camp offers basic safari tents, camping and a communal dining/hangout area all set on a beautiful boulder-strung small beach. This island offers a back-to-nature feel. It offers some challenging hikes up the hillside but with the most incredible views from the top making it worth the effort.
After lunch, you’ll take the boat from Domwe to Mumbo island - around 30 minutes through Lake Malawi National Park waters. Accommodation for the next two nights will be in an ensuite safari tent on a full board basis. Activities such as hiking, snorkelling and kayaking are included. Additional options of scuba diving, massages and sunset boat trips are also available.
This exclusive getaway from the hustle and bustle offers the opportunity to truly be at one with nature. Many people fall in love with this uninhabited island and its rustic barefoot luxury. Chill in a hammock with a book or take a swim around the outcroppings of rocks, this is one of Malawi’s most popular islands.
After lunch, your boat will depart Mumbo island for the trip back to the mainland. You’ll have one last night in Cape Maclear, staying again in an ensuite courtyard room at Thumbi View Lodge on a bed and breakfast rate. This will give you the perfect opportunity to buy those last souvenirs or perhaps enjoy a relaxing catamaran trip to watch the sunset over the lake
Today we depart Cape Maclear for the 4 hour journey back to Lilongwe or Blantyre where your trip ends.
